Agrivoltaics project at Spaces of Opportunity

After raising $17,000 through community donations and sponsorships we executed a 4.8 KWH agrivoltaics  project at at Spaces of Opportunity. This 19-acre urban farm sits in the middle of South Phoenix’s food desert, and promotes healthy food choices while allowing  low-income farmers and community members an opportunity rent plots to grow and sell their produce. This project will not only help the local community but will also set an example for commercial, family, and community farms around the country to adopt Agrivoltaics. Produce grown will be donated to school cafeterias, farmers markets and food banks.

This project recieved the Girl Scout Gold Award. Thank you to the Girl Scout community!

Growing Green

Opening ceremony

On April 12, 2024, we celebrated the inauguration of our 4.8 KW agrivoltaics installation at Spaces of Opportunity, sponsored by Agrisolar Clearinghouse during their national tour. The event highlighted sustainable farming technologies, featuring insights from Professor Greg Barron-Gafford and USDA State Director Ginger Sykes Torres, who emphasized the importance of agrivoltaics and sustainable agriculture in Arizona. This milestone was made possible by Spaces of Opportunity, Roosevelt School District, Tiger Mountain Foundation, FOREnergy, Titan, Fundusol, the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and the Sonoran Photovoltaic Lab. Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported this project.

Planting Crops Under the Agrivoltaics system at spaces of opportunity

We have planted over 800+ transplants under our agrivoltaic systems and control  beds. Produce is being donated to food banks, school cafeterias and farmers markets benefiting low income farmers.
At Spaces of opportunity we are doing data collection in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture Arid Land Research Center to document the results and benefits of Agrivoltaics.
